Disruptive innovation is a concept developed by Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen that has gained widespread traction in the business world, and increasingly in the social sector. According to Christensen, a disruptive innovation is a technology, process, or business model that brings to market a product or service that is much more affordable and much simpler to use than what is currently available. It enables more consumers in the market to afford and/or have the ability to use the product or service. The change caused by such an innovation is so big that it eventually replaces, or disrupts, the established approach to providing that product or service. Mission First Solutions (MFS) is a disruptive innovation.

The Mission First Solutions ‘management engine’ gives organizations the opportunity to spend more of their time on mission, substantially reduce their costs and enhance the quality of experience for themselves and the people they serve.

Mission First Solutions simply put does four things:

  1. Outsourcing
  2. Collaboration
  3. Education and Training
  4. Economic Development

The combination of these four activities creates measurable third sector improvement.

Mission First Solutions provides nonprofit organizations with highly proficient outsourcers for non mission related functions (Evaluation, Accounting, Administration, Bookkeeping, IT and HR). Through a COOP method MFS, also creates opportunities for outsourcers to use the services of both the nonprofits or other outsourcers to help them achieve more mission (HR organization can have its IT done by the IT organization in the system.)  MFS provides funding for the nonprofit first movers in the system by leveraging foundations and government agency funding to grant capacity and sustainability.   This allows everybody in the system to deliver significantly more mission efficiently and effectively. Ultimately when our 20,000 nonprofits are accomplishing more of their mission – we can truly end homelessness, domestic violence and find the cure for cancer in Colorado.  When our outsourcers are at capacity serving many organizations at once – and not spending their time on business development, marketing and PR they too are meeting more mission and drastically improving economic development.  When our Foundations and Government agencies can put their money and resources toward the most effective and efficient organizations spending their time on mission they can give more money and resources to solve more.

Mission First solutions also creates both a filter and a central clearing house for volunteers and organizations throughout the state to focus their energies when they want to become involved with a cause they care passionately about and efficiently use their gifts and talents to serve more effectively.
